Johor Bahru’s pasar malam circuit rotates through the city by night, with a different neighbourhood hosting one each evening, and they are among the best value food in Malaysia. Almost no visitors find them because they are residential rather than central. Travellers who book Johor Bahru flights with Traveloka should pick a night and travel out to it rather than eating near the checkpoint.

How the rotation works

Each market runs one evening a week in a specific neighbourhood, setting up around five and packing down by ten or eleven. The stalls travel between them, so the same vendors appear in a different place each night. Ask at your hotel which one is on tonight, since the schedule shifts occasionally and is not published anywhere reliable.

Taman Pelangi, the easiest

Closest to the city centre and the one most visitors can reach without planning, running on a weekday evening along a residential street. Expect ramly burgers, apam balik, satay, fried chicken, cut fruit and a great deal of drinks in plastic bags. It is modest in size and entirely adequate as an introduction.

Pasar Karat, the night flea market

Separate from the food markets, the karat market near the old railway station deals in second-hand goods, much of it genuine junk, some of it interesting: tools, phone parts, watches, clothing and occasional antiques. It runs most nights. Haggling is expected and the lighting is poor, so inspect anything carefully before paying.

What to eat specifically here

Johor has its own dishes and the markets are where to find them. Laksa Johor, made with spaghetti rather than rice noodles in a thick fish and coconut gravy, exists nowhere else. Mee rebus, lontong and otak-otak are all local. Look for the stall with the longest queue of locals, which is a reliable signal.

Kuih and the sweet stalls

Malay sweets are sold by the piece from trays: kuih talam in layers, ondeh-ondeh filled with molten palm sugar, seri muka with its pandan top. They cost a few sen each and are made that day. Buy a mixed bag rather than choosing, which is what everyone else does and costs almost nothing.

Pasar Tani and the morning alternative

If the evening rotation does not fit your schedule, the farmers’ markets run on weekday mornings in several neighbourhoods, selling vegetables, fish and prepared breakfast rather than snacks. They are smaller, cooler and considerably easier to photograph. The one at Larkin is the largest and doubles as the city’s main wholesale market.

Practical notes

Markets are cash only and nothing takes cards. Go hungry and early, around six, when the food is freshest and the crowd is thinner. Grab is cheap and the easiest way to reach the residential markets. Prices are roughly a third of the Singapore equivalent. Traveloka offers the lowest flight prices in the region for the Senai connections.

Ask which market is on tonight, arrive at six with cash, and look specifically for laksa Johor. The rotation is the thing nobody tells visitors about.
